KUALA LUMPUR: Police found an object resembling a grenade at De Tropicana Condominium, Jalan Kuchai Maju 13, yesterday morning.

The discovery was made after City police arrested a suspected drug addict, in his 40s, near an entertainment outlet in Jalan Kuchai Lama at 9.30am.

City police chief Datuk Mazlan Lazim Mazlan in a statement said interrogation revealed that the man had left the grenade there.

“He had left the grenade at a drain near a staircase in the condominium compound. The man had hidden the object following concerns that he might be arrested by the authorities (for possessing the grenade). Checks showed that he did not have a previous criminal record.”

Mazlan said the object had been secured by the bomb unit for analysis.

“The building compound was scanned by the Bomb Unit and the K9 unit and no other explosives found. The area has been declared safe.

“The suspect claimed that he obtained the explosive from a friend who got it from Thailand two years ago.”

Police had ruled out elements of terrorism in the case.
