BALING: Over 70 houses in Kupang were damaged when 20 villages were hit by a storm yesterday evening.

Most of the houses were partially destroyed as the roofs were blown off by the strong winds and in some cases the houses were hit by uprooted trees.

Kupang state assemblyman Datuk Harun Abd Aziz said more than 300 villagers were affected in the natural disaster.

He said apart from damaging houses, some of the uprooted trees fell on the road and obstructed traffic.

"Among the agencies which helped to remove the trees from the road were state Works Department, Baling District Council, Fire and Rescue Department, Malaysia Civil Defence Force, Baling/Sik Education Office and Baling District Office.

"This is among the worst storms that hit the district. However no casualties were reported," he said.
