KUALA LUMPUR: PKR de factor leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim believes that his release from prison was due to the efforts and struggles of his supporters for the past 20 years.

He said his freedom was the people’s achievement and he thanked everyone who had supported and prayed for him.

“I thank Allah, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong has granted me the pardon, and also (thank) the entire Malaysian spectrum (Malays, Chinese, Indians, Kadazans and Ibans) who stood for democracy and freedom. They have demanded a change,”he said in an inaugural press conference at his residence in Segambut.

Anwar said his release was the beginning of a new chapter for change that demands people to work with the Pakatan Harapan government and move forward to develop the nation.

“We need to move forward. I feel that all the efforts and struggle for the past 20 years was not in vain. I have felt all the suffering, misery and being humiliated during that period.

“I had to bear it all. Azizah, my family and friends had to bear it, too.

“Alhamdulliah with the support of the people we can see changes. I am touched. Imagine, from being a prisoner I was given the highest honour by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong who clarified why I was granted the pardon without any condition,” he said. — Reports by Seri Nor Nadiah Koris, Rohaniza Idris, Safeej Affendy Razali, Nasaruddin Parzi, P.
