SHAH ALAM: Selangor Umno has confidence in its current leadership led by Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi who is carrying out the duties of the party president and sees no need for a new leader to take over the No 1 post.
Selangor Umno liaison committee deputy chief Datuk Mat Nadzari Ahmad Dahlan said they had taken the stance of status quo to have Zahid at helm, alongside vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein, who is carrying out duties of deputy president.
“The issue of proposing someone else to be Umno’s new party president does not arise. It is unnecessary given the vulnerable and disappointed state that we are in at the moment. I do not see the need to argue about a new party president now.
“We have confidence and trust in Zahid and Hishammuddin who are very capable in steering the party towards the right path and bring it back to its days of glory. Both Zahid and Hishammuddin have been in Umno for a very long time, they are very experienced and have the wisdom. We believe and are rest assured in their leadership,” Mat Nadzari said.
Mat Nadzari, who is also Hulu Selangor Umno division chairman, dismissed talks that the party’s veteran leader Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah may be proposed as the new party president during the upcoming Selangor Umno branch meeting expected to kickstart on May 19.
“I have not heard of it and to have Tengku Razaleigh as the new party president has never been discussed,” he said.
Meanwhile, Shah Alam and Klang Umno division chiefs Datuk Azhari Shaari and Datuk Nasaruddin M. Zin respectively said there was no such proposal.
Azhari, asked if he would support such a proposal, if any, said his division’s decision would be in line with what would be decided by Umno leadership.
On May 13, former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak quit as Barisan Nasional chairman and Umno president following Umno’s defeat in the recent 14th general election.
Najib announced that Zahid would take over the duties of Umno president while Hishammuddin will carry out the duties of deputy president and BN deputy chairman.
